Character Name: Waverly Earp
Series: Wynonna Earp
Timeline: The very end of Season Two.
Canon Resource Link: Waverly's entry on the Wynonna Wikia
Character History: The series opens on the awkward reunion between Earp sisters Wynonna and Waverly; specifically with Waverly almost blowing her sister to pieces for sleeping with Champ, Waverly's good-for-nothing boyfriend. This theme, with Champ that is, will continue through most of the early days in Purgatory. Waverly is the baby of the Earp family, and the only one who has stayed in town since their mother's disappearance and the death of both their only other sister and their father on the same night when Waverly was a child.

The two sister couldn't have coped with the trauma in more different ways. While Wynonna rebelled, did her best to do her worst in school, and got out of town as soon as she could? Waverly flourished in the small midwestern town. She excelled in academics, was captain of the cheerleading squad, prom queen, and was even voted Nicest Person. That last part was no fake accolade either. In the face of extreme loneliness and self-doubt, Waverly chose to be a beacon of happiness. Every smile, all the cheery optimism, it was and remains real. As such, she's not angry when Wynonna finally returns to town, no Waverly is overjoyed. It doesn't take long for the two to forgive old hurts, spit in the faces of some Revenants, and vow to slay the Earp Curse together that Wynonna has now inheirited.

And time hasn't left Waverly on her laurels. She spent several years studying by correspondence and is fluent in at least four languages, familiar with ancient civilizations, and has spent her time reading up on the occult. While Wynonna keeps her little sister at a distance early on, it's not from lack of trying to get involved with the secretive Black Badge division on Waverly's part. After nearly being killed by the cursed undead early on, Waverly is emphatic that she can help. She's been collecting all kind of information on the originally cursed individuals, called Revenants, that Wyatt Earp's descendants must slay in their own permutation of the curse. Eventually, when she realized that she was tricked as a child by one of the present-day leaders of a band of demons, Bobo Del Ray, to bury a talisman that allowed the attack on the family homestead so many years ago, Waverly realizes just how serious this work is. Her confidence is shaken but they don't have much time to dwell.

There's some solace in the fact the Earp girls are able to move back into their childhood home, but it doesn't last long. Shorty, the owner of the bar that Waverly has been working at for years and like family to them both is killed by Revenants in a gross display meant for Wynonna. This is upsetting enough for Waverly that she and Champ rekindle things for a time, though she also ends up deepening her friendship with a new Sheriff's deputy in town as well, Officer Nicole Haught.

Around this time she makes the connection that a new-to-town fellow that's been hanging around curiously matches a vintage photograph of one Doc Henry Holliday, former partner to their ancestor Wyatt Earp. Though Waverly intends to follow up on this, havoc caused by various Revenants, including on who ends up causing Doc to be framed for murder for a time, precludes her from doing so. Instead, she does manage to prove Doc's innocence as well as her own skills with both linguistics and demonic lore when they end up summoning a particularly difficult demon in an attempt to send him to hell permanently. In a fitting twist, we learn that he's come for Wynonna because she owes Waverly a true apology; Waverly has felt jilted her entire life when she's prepared to be the Earp heir, studied, wants the duty, and meanwhile Wynonna doesn't even want to be back in Purgatory much less fighting Revenants. In the end, the real and proper forgiveness that the sisters have been slowly working towards is voiced out loud. Things aren't perfect but they're finally being honest.

As time goes on, Waverly does become more instrumental in the work Wynonna, her boss Dolls, and the rest in the Black Badge Division do to try and contain what's happening in the Ghost River Triangle. She goes on reconnaissance missions, although in one instance she's absolutely caught by Bobo Del Rey. Deciding she's had enough of his mind games, of his haunting her steps like a shadow since childhood, she confronts him after Dolls executes a sting operation on the Revenant side of town. Ever a demon, he gives her cryptic answers that are a mix of truth and lies; ultimately all his replies do is leave Waverly doubting herself instead of closer to any kind of truth.

In actuality, the reason Bobo is obsessed with her, in so much as she or Wynonna can determine, is because when Wynonna and Robert, Bobo's name in life before the curse, interacted through the weak veil across time, Wynonna told Robert to protect 'his angel.' However, the name she gave when prompted was Waverly. Despite her inability to show it, Wynonna loves her sister and very deeply so. It takes some time for Waverly to really realize this, given that words don't come easy to the elder Earp and the younger made an art out of being cheery, upbeat, and acting as though nothing were wrong. When their sister Willa mysteriously returns from the dead though, this facade gets harder and harder to keep up for Waverly.

At this point, things have ended with Champ. After a particularly offensive outburst, Waverly called it quits for good. Things may have been encouraged by her blossoming feelings for Nicole Haught too. For a time, Waverly keeps this new development to herself. There's the fear of judgement, sure, but also there's the desire to just have one thing that's all hers. Not for the sake of her family, her town, or anyone else. Eventually though, when Willa catches them kissing, things come crashing down. The same feeling of being an outsider comes flooding back and leaves Waverly feeling morose and despondent. Worse, when she does try to explain things to Wynonna, it doesn't quite come out right. Once again, it isn't for lack of love between the two sisters so much as a lack of good communicating. In the end Wynonna is quick to remind Waverly of how much she's always loved her baby sister and to rebuke Willa for her various nasty asides.

The ultimate rebuke ends up being the hardest though. Just like when they were children, Willa cannot be saved. She's consumed and lost the the otherworldly darkness and Wynonna is left heartbroken once more. Waverly might have been too but we aren't given much time to determine her genuine reaction as she is quickly infected by a dark ooze left behind in Willa's decimation. The ooze is a physical manifestation of a dark entity. For a time, Waverly and the evil force manage to mostly fool everyone. While Nicole is suspicious, it would appear that everyone else hasn't quite noticed yet.

"Waverly" manages to out herself relatively early on in the way she tastes sometimes while kissing and then, later, when she comes across a particularly strong piece of possessed artifact and ends up behaving both inappropriately and out of character with Nicole at the annual homecoming celebration. Things continue to escalate between the couple and, worse, in the choices "Waverly" makes. She ends up abducting Dolls, who we've come to learn has supernatural powers, and tortures him. When back with the group, they assign "Waverly" on an undercover mission. This ends in what would seem disaster, with her hand being cut off, however because of the apparently regenerative goo in her system she is left without a wound by the time her teammates come to tend her. In the celebration aftermath back at base, "Waverly" hugs and kisses her sister and the entity passes itself on.

The entity, properly known as the demon Mictian, continues this behavior of occupying others until it ends up back in Waverly's body as Waverly knows they'll need Wynonna free of possession to operate Peacemaker. The team manages to create an antidote of sorts that forces Waverly to expel the demon and, as planned, in the end it's dispatched with. There's not much time to rest, or a lot of time considering, as a spell is cast over the town a short time later. When Wynonna is roused by Peacemaker she finds that so much time has passed her early pregnancy is now late in the final trimester. Rousing Waverly and the rest of the group, they all go hunting for the source. It would seem that the evil resident town witches, called the Widows, have been hunting for hidden seals to bring their dead husband back from the beyond. Everyone pitches in to help slow down their progression, though Waverly will soon find herself waylaid by one of the human familiars the Widows have kept around. He's been obsessed with Waverly for years and with the assistance of the supernatural he won't have to bide his time much longer.

After Doc's new squeeze Rosita tries to throw a baby shower for Wynonna, with Waverly's help, and it goes bust, the pair decide they deserve a night out. She doesn't know about the things her sister saw in her vision quest; namely the real reason behind why Bobo is so obsessed with her. Nor does her sister know why Waverly and Nicole are on the outs since Wynonna never made it to the baby shower. After finding the results to a DNA test she ordered in Nicole's bag, Waverly was furious. She hadn't want it intercepted or read by Wynonna before she was ready, and after all the things Willa and Bobo had said, along with a nagging gut feeling, Waverly wanted to see if she really was an Earp. Rather than let her see for herself, Nicole had aimed to spare her lover some heartache and advocated for remembering that once read the results can't be taken back. While this came from a place of love, Waverly saw it as condescending and infantalizing.

What better a trip to take than a spa day with a friend? Unfortunately, these things never are as simple as they should be in the Ghost River Triangle. Not only did Waverly send off some incredibly flippant remarks to Nicole, possibly imply they were on a break, and share an illicit (though chaste) kiss with Rosita, but her nightmarish stalker managed to follow her all the way into the boonies in the middle of the night. Tucker Gardner makes her hostage, albeit a briefly held status. Rosita manages to save the day, though she has to reveal she's a Revenant in the process. Waverly isn't upset by this knowledge though and we soon learn she might be half-Rev herself.

The fallout of such a night should have been a poor one but, instead, it's all the light that Waverly needs to show her the way. She heads over to Nicole's to make amends only to find her lover under attack from one of the Widows. Worse is that the Widow is wearing a friend's face - quite literally. Waverly fights spectacularly but it's not quite enough and just near the end Nicole suffers from a poison bite of the Widow. In her desperation to help Nicole, Waverly lets the Widow escape. Nicole quickly falls ill, and there's little that can be done for her with traditional medicine even after she's brought to the hospital.

Everyone turns up to help though and Waverly is touched to see how much everyone cares. For a while she's good about pitching in and doing things the right way. Collecting the right information, rare ingredients, whatever is asked. In the end though, she caves and grants the wish of someone who offered her a far better cure. The sister of one of their earlier allies has promised she'll cure Nicole; for a price. That price, as it turns out, is that everyone will forget Wynonna and it will be as if she never existed. The loss of the woman's sister in helping the Earp girls was so painful that she wants them to experience losing a sister in return. This sets off an entire alternate reality, one where Black Badge does its work without the Earp heir, where Nicole is sheriff, and where Waverly is marrying another classmate entirely. This reality doesn't suit anyone, even the woman who cast the spell, and very quickly those left try to unravel it. Glimpses of the true timeline come through once and that's enough to motivate Waverly to fix things for good, as if she wasn't already compelled by the mysterious remarks and visions of another life.

As things are rest, and Wynonna brought back from a mysterious void of non-existence, Waverly and Nicole make up with each other and exchange apologies. Then it's off to find Wynonna who's had the misfortune of beginning labor. There's not much time for everything to go off smoothly, including the birth and getting the child out of the Ghost River Triangle safely, but they manage it. Rosita tries to betray them at Shorty's Bar, with the intent to steal Wynonna's daughter just after birth. It's at this point we see Peacemaker cooperate willingly with Waverly and allow her to shoot at Rosita and chase her off; rather than the usual red glow in the etching, we see it a light up with a bright blue. Immediately after things are sorted with Rosita, Peacemaker burns Waverly's hand leaving her to question exactly what she is.

While Waverly doesn't get an exact answer right away, she does get exclusions rather fast. Because Wynonna wasn't entirely certain who the baby's father was, before sending it away from Purgatory for safety they needed to be certain the child didn't have Revenant blood. Revenants burn when leaving the confines of the Ghost River Triangle. With her niece in her arms, Waverly has Nicole drive them to the city limits and exits the car so they can see, together, if either of them has any bit of Revenant in them. To Waverly's absolute joy they both cross the boundary with no effects. The three of them quickly leave and head out to a field to meet up with a high school friend who will whisk the baby anonymously to safety.

Abilities/Special Powers: As far as benign skills go, Waverly is multilingual (including occult languages), skilled with shotguns and learning with hand guns and sniper rifles, and is highly intellectual despite the fact she makes an impressive drink as her main job for about half the series.

At this point in time, we've learned that Waverly must have some kind of supernatural powers though it's unclear of what. Wynonna's gun (Peacemaker) lets Waverly use it for defense needs despite her not being an Earp. Later than the point in canon I am taking her from, it's revealed that Waverly is essentially half-angel. However, Waverly is not aware of this at this time in game nor does she know how to access her powers. I will submit a canon update should this change.

Third-Person Sample:
Waverly has had an easier time adjusting to Wonderland than she suspects many have. Back home in Purgatory she'd never ventured far. There wasn't a reason really, beyond feeling compelled to stay in case she ever ended up needing to fulfill her duty as Earp heir. Or, well, what she once thought would eventually be her duty. Regardless, it meant she hadn't stretched her legs beyond her home town and thus doesn't feel so limited by the confines of this new place as many do. Likewise, given the horrors she's witnessed since Wynonna came home and hit the magical curse age? Most of the events the Queens and their castle seem to conjure up pale to sorting out Revenants. Some events are even a little bit enjoyable!

There are a lot of reasons to miss home though, truly. Proper seasons, the Earp homestead, actually receiving Tarte cosmetics from the closets instead of Tart or Torte when one asks. However, for Waverly, the only real thing she longs for is her girlfriend. Things had just started to get back on track with Nicole when Waverly found herself trapped in Wonderland. While she believes everyone who reports that time is at a standstill back home, her own experiences suggest otherwise. Wynonna and Doc haven't lived through the whole demon goo nightmare. Worse, they have yet to learn about their future daughter. While Waverly knows about alternate universes from experience, this discrepancy doesn't seem to fit such a theory.

Eventually, Waverly will have to tell them. Wynonna and Doc. Keeping secrets, in her book, is tantamount to lying. Lying by omission isn't any better than just telling a falsehood, right? Still, seeing the relative peace that this insane place has brought them - such peace that the pair even married - makes revealing anything about her lost niece a hard pill for Waverly to swallow. She knows she can't keep it hidden forever, if only because somehow the events will out it given what others have told her about secrets and indiscretions being revealed in the most inopportune ways.

Right now though, Waverly just wants to enjoy this little bit of peace. She's never seen a beach before and someone mentioned a floating bar. Somehow she's convinced Wynonna and Doc to meet here there, hopefully both prepared with bathing suits, so she can enjoy her first real swim with a real drink in her hand. One that's not some questionable pond on an ex's buddy's pond with a Bud Lite tossed from a trash bag filled with ice.

First-Person Sample:
[There's a mid-20s girl on the screen, beaming from ear to ear. Sure, it's been a hellish couple of months but, somehow, she's either unphased or remarkable well adjusted. A tiny wave is offered.]

Well hiya there, guys, gals, and everyone else! I know, I know, it's probably waaaaay too early to be this perky but after some encouragement I ended up really excited.

[She takes a breath. Don't act too silly now Waves.]

I was thinking, it might be nice to have some kind of organized exercise activity. But, you know, a fun version! Keep that cardio up for events, help out people who might need it on their coordination, that sort of thing.

So, that in mind, who would be interested in a dance squad? [Oh yeah, she said that.] You wouldn't need any experience or anything! Just having fun, learning some moves, getting to shake off the gloomies!
